Upgrade Your Garage Floor with Color Flakes

If you’re looking for a project that upgrades your home while also showing off your personal style, the garage is a great place to start – specifically, the floor.

With a little creativity and our Chips Unlimited vinyl flake blends, you can create a truly custom and beautiful garage floor yourself.

Here’s what you need to know about upgrading your garage floor with flakes and epoxy:

What exactly are vinyl flakes?

These colorful chips are made of acrylic and vinyl resins. Typically, the flakes are 4-5 mils in thickness and range from 1/32” to 1” in diameter. (PS – Our blends are sold as ¼”, but you can contact our store for a custom size)

They are also UV stable and can hide some imperfections on the surface of your concrete. You can also choose the coverage rate based on how you apply them.

What are the different coverage rates?

Usually, DIY-ers choose from four coverage rates: full refusal, heavy, medium, and light.  When determining the coverage rate, it is also important to keep in mind your base color.

Greys and tan are the most common, offering a neutral color that won’t interfere with the flake color. However, it is up to you based on your own personal style!

How do I apply vinyl color flakes?

The first step to upgrading your garage floor with flakes is applying the base epoxy coating. Apply the flakes within 10 minutes after the final back roll of your base coat. The coating needs to be soft and tacky to ensure a good bond with the flakes.

The best way to apply the flakes is relatively easy, although there is a crucial technique that needs to be utilized.

Place all of your flakes into a bucket. From that bucket, grab small handfuls and toss. That’s it!

Now, as for that special technique: Do not toss your flakes down towards the floor. Instead, toss them high up into the air so they will disperse more evenly.

Once you have your desired coverage rate, scrape off any flakes that are sticking up or at odd angles. This step must be done gently, as using too much force will scratch the base epoxy coat.

After scraping, apply a clear coat, and you’re done! You’ve finished your garage floor upgrade with flakes and epoxy!
